Class 1 Division 2 Chillers
C1D2 Rated Explosion Proof Industrial Chillers Designed for Hazardous Environments
UL-NNNY Certified Process Chillers for Hazardous Environments
Our custom engineered chiller systems can be designed for Class 1 Division 2 explosion proof hazardous environments using either semi-hermetic or open drive compressor motors. Control panels can be remote mounted or purged and skid-mounted.
Tempest designs to the following ratings: Class 1, Division 2, Groups B, C, and/or D
Hazardous Classifications, Divisions, and Group Rating Information
Hazardous Classification: Defines the GENERAL NATURE OR PROPERTIES of the hazardous material in the surrounding atmosphere
CLASS 1
Flammable gases, vapors, or liquids are present, or may be present in quantities sufficient to produce explosive or ignitable mixtures
CLASS 2
Combustible dusts are present, or may be present in quantities sufficient to produce explosive or ignitable mixtures
CLASS 3
Ignitable fibers or flyings are present, or may be present in quantities sufficient to produce explosive or ignitable mixtures
Hazardous Divisions: Defines the PROBABILITY of the hazardous material being present in an ignitable concentration in the surrounding atmosphere
DIVISION 1
The substance referred to by class has a high probability of producing an explosive or ignitable mixture due to it being present continuously, intermittently, or periodically or from the equipment itself under normal operating conditions
DIVISION 2
The substance referred to by class has a low probability of producing an explosive or ignitable mixture and is present only during abnormal conditions for a short period of time such as a container failure or system breakdown
Hazardous Group: Defines the TYPE of the hazardous material in the surrounding atmosphere
GROUP A
Atmosphere containing acetylene
GROUP B
Atmosphere containing a flammable gas, a flammable liquid produced vapor, or a combustible liquid produced vapor mixed with air that may burn or explode having either a MESG (Maximum Experimental Safe Gap) value less than or equal to 0.45 mm or a MIC (Minimum Igniting Current) ratio less than or equal to 0.40 – such as hydrogen or fuel and combustible process gases containing more than 30% hydrogen by volume – or gases of equivalent hazard such as butadiene, ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, and acrolein
GROUP C
Atmosphere containing a flammable gas, a flammable liquid produced vapor or a combustible liquid-produced vapor whose MESG is greater than 0.75 mm or MIC ratio is greater than 0.40 and less than 0.80 – such as carbon monoxide, ether, hydrogen sulfide, morphline, cyclopropane, ethyl, isoprene, acetaldhyde and ethylene or gases of equivalent hazard
GROUP D
Atmosphere containing flammable gas, flammable liquid produced vapor, or combustible liquid produced vapor mixed with air that may burn or explode, having either a MESG value greater than 0.75 mm or a MIC ratio greater than 0.80 – such as gasoline, acetone, ammonia, benzene, butane, ethanol, hexane, methanol, methane, vinyl chloride, natural gas, naphtha, propane or gases of equivalent hazardĀ
Examples of Tempest Chillers Designed for Class 1 Division 2 Hazardous Industrial Environments
UL-NNNY C1D2 Rated Industrial Process Chillers
- Panels certified by UL to meet stringent safety and performance standards for industrial refrigeration equipment.
- Specifically designed to operate safely in hazardous environments where flammable gases or vapors may occasionally be present (Class 1, Division 2).
- Built for industrial applications requiring precise cooling, such as in chemical processing, oil and gas, or other industries with hazardous conditions.
Design Features of a C1D2 Rated UL-NNY Chiller
- Explosion-proof components: Electrical components (e.g., motors, wiring) are sealed or designed to prevent sparks that could ignite flammable gases.
- Robust construction: Materials and designs that withstand harsh industrial environments, such as stainless steel or corrosion-resistant coatings.
- Safety controls: Features like pressure relief valves, alarms, or automatic shutoffs to handle abnormal conditions safely.
- Compliance with NEC and UL standards: Ensures the chiller meets regulatory requirements for hazardous locations.
